FRIM & Orphanage ♥

 Day Three,

Went to FRIM which is also known as, Forest Institute of Research Malaysia. It’s an organization that does forest research to better improve the rainforests in Malaysia. An example will be by modifying the genes of the seeds to grow fruits faster, mix other genes of fuits to produce a sweet, big and tasty fruit e.g D24 etc.

This actually helped us to have better understanding to our Geography related topics like Georgraphy of Food and Forest & Natural Vegetation.

So basically, we bused down to FRIM's office and was given an hour talk on how to conserve Forests and why are Forests important to humans. The guy was humurous and interesting! Pretty cool cause this actually helped us to pay more attention to what he wants to present to us!
After having an enjoyable discussion and talk, we were led by a tour guide (Not Aunty Eileen) who will bring us touring around to have a look at these magnificent rainforest.

We were introduced to a small pond and were asked to clap our hands. She later explained that by clapping our hands, it symbolises the calling of the humongous fishes in that pond, and they will surface up. Doubting her words, all of us started clapping our hands and indeed, they starts to surface up and we noticed one very big, fat and juicy fish. LOL. However, our tour guide told us that that fish was not the biggest in the pond. The biggest and longest fish measures up to 2metres! Scary, ain't it?
This particular fish measures about 1.7metres, if I remember correctly. Hmm..

So we continued our walk after being awed by that clap-clap-fish!

As we walked through the forest, the tour guide will stop occasionally to give us pointers on what type and species of tree that is, and what functions do they provide, whether if it's hard wood or soft wood, is it able to use for furniture and so on.

In addition to that, we learnt that trees have many different type of uses as well! It provides us with medication, helps reduce global warming by absorbing the extra CO2 that we humans have produced in our daily activity and returning us fresh oxygen, take in the polluted air given out by factories and motor wehicles as well, and many more!

So guys,
 SAVE THE TREES!

Cause they can help reduce global warming and thus, water level will not increase that much per year, resulting in hope for Singapore as Singapore is one of the low-land island that risk getting swallowed by the Sea! To summarize this, saving trees = saving lives!

LOL.

Oki, back to trees...

These are bamboo! They're uber tall and strong. Thick as well! Not like those weakling bamboos you usually see as a panda's food. Well, I reckon these are 10 times of the normal bamboos you see. Fascinated by this!

We passed by this tree that has roots called, prop roots. They resemble an animal that has a long nose, thick skin and big ears! Hahah, look like elephant?

The semi-man-made rainforest full of trees.

Walk walk walk.

And spotted these! Aren't they beautiful?! They're called Lianas and are actually harmful to the trees as they slowly wind up a tree, they fight and steal sunlight but the poor trees can't shake them off. :( Some trees even die due to lack of sunlight because of these Lianas, resulting in their unable-ness to photosynthesize and die. Aww..

But heck, they WOW-ed me when I laid my eyes upon their gorgeous curls!

They crawl, too!
The tour guide said that you can actually climb on these Lianas as they're strong and secured to the tree.

Anyway, trees are clever, too! Notice how their Canopy do not touch each other? That's because they respect each other's privacy! Hahah! No lah, only the same species of this type of trees do not touch each other, as they do not want to overlap each other, fighting for sunlight. However, this only happens in man-made rainforests, as you don't expect a natural rainforest to coincidently have all the same species of trees in one group, right?

Oh yeah, look at those roots! Joined all the way up. I reckon these are called buttress roots as rainforests have the ideal temperature and rainfall, trees tends to grow big and huge. So the roots are designed like this to support the weight of it's own tree.

And each trees were tagged with some special number code thingy. Furthermore, look at the ground! It's all covered with dead leaves and thus, forming leaf litter. Leaf litter contains alot of nutrients and will help fertilise the soil, as the trees will take in nutrients from the soil, the leaf litter then replenishes the nutrients, like a cycle. Cool huh?

The walk was not very long uh. But it was quite adventurous as it's a tad bit difficult to walk due to the uneven platforms, slippery mud and stuffs. Still, it's a new experience for us and what's more, there's pure and fresh oxygen, too! Here's serenity away from the hustle and bustle of our usual Singaporean lifestyle.

So we got out of the rainforest and headed off to lunch. Three unlucky people got leeches stuck on them! In case you guys don't know what a leech is, here's a picture of one leech sucking some blood.

As it hung on the underside of leaves, waiting for careless legs to brush against these leaves so that they could leech on our blood. Initially, they were about 2cm long. But we heard that it could really expand and go big, fat and juicy! Well, according to the victims, they could feel nothing, no pain at all. Hmm...

Moreover, you couldn't just pluck out the leech as it literally sticks on you like the elephant brand superglue. Even if you successfully plucks them out, the teeth will still bi in your wound, resulting in profuse bleeding. So the best way to overcome this is!

TADAH!

Axe brand medicated oil! Pour this on the leech and they will immediately lose their grip and drop off on it's own. Credits go to Madam Yusma for this information!

Yuppyupp!

Ate our lunch and headed off to Sunbeam Orphanage ! ♥

SCREAM FOR PEIYI!

When we reached there, the kids were all running around all over the place, playing like how we used to play when we were much younger. However none of us moved a muscle as we were all foreign to each other and stared blankly to one another.

There, running about all over the place.

Just then, something appeared! Nope, it's not a shooting star, neither was it a bird. It was a hero! It was Jiaxin! LOL.

So Jiaxin the Great started cue first, and approached this bubbly little girl named PeiYi. Both of us clicked immediately and she stuck on to me like a Liana. Cool right!

Evidence of Jiaxin the Great reaching out to Peiyi!

And success! FIRST BLOOD! :D

This picture is for Xavier.
See! Peiyi with you not happy, she never smile. She's much better off and happier with me! >;)

Mark's team joined ours for Musical Chair and off we go, setting up chairs in a circle.

Musical Chairs.

Mark, being the judge or something?

Xavier trying to find an empty chair to sit on!

Me, guiding Peiyi! ♥

Everybody so gan-chiong. Hahah!

And when the music stopped, Alvin and I were fighing over the last chair available!
Guess who won?

Peiyi and I! :D

After a few rounds of Musical Chairs. All of us were dead beat and were perspiring like nobody's business. So we changed game! Into,

Eagle Catch Little Chicks! LOL.

I roared like some tiger even though it clearly stated Eagle Catching Little Chicks. LOL.
Yeah, everyone made a fool out of themselves and we were back into our childhood days. People were all looking at us as if we're all oh-so-childish but it doesn't matter cause I believed that everyone knew this would bring a smile to those cute little kids there and this little sacrifice was nothing! WOOHOO! Did I just described how great and awesome 5a-ians were?! :D

Me, a lion-eagle wannabe.

I volunteered to be the Eagle for the first round, and Hong Guo the Mother Hen.

Trying to catch some chicks while the other kids learn some origami.

Hong Jin and his little one being the Eagles, while Alvin act as our Mother Hen, protecting us, the Little Chicks!

Lousy Hong Jin still cannot catch some Chicks.

Hmm, I thought I'm the chick this time round?

Gripping firmly to each other so that they won't be caught so easily.
PEIYI IS SUPERBLY KAWAII!

Peiyi's slipper dropped halfway. Hahah!

A few couple of rounds and by then, we were all exhausted to the max. Changed game, again! Peiyi and the other guys suggested Choo-choo-train. LOL. So we just play only! Since it's a more relaxing game.

The two tallest guys will be our Pillars of Strength.

Starring,

Mark Ong! and...

Hong Guo!

I'm the front that goes, "Choo-choo!".

Choo-choo-train lasted for only around ten minutes, and running out of physical big movements games, we seated them down in a circle and played some not-so-tiring-with-so-much-movements games like Oh~Macoroni.

Forming a cirle with chairs.

Hong Jin communicating happily with one little cute boy.

ULTIMATE CUTENESS! ♥

I got terribly bullied by them. :(

Settled down and took one group photo!

Peaceeee! v(^-^)v

I then gave Peiyi strawberry flavoured chewing gums as she so happens to like strawberries, too! This is a reward for her for being sooo adorable. HAHAH! Yeah, I'm bias. :D

When the time was ripe, it was time for our whole bus performance! We seated every kid down and prepared our Hybrid Nobody dance with the Chicken Dance. Lol.

Well, but met up with some techinal problems as the speaker had no batt and Mark needed to rushed all the way back to the Coach to fetch his charger. Blasted the music and danced!

After the whole group performance, the malay boys came up with tecktonik dance and we came up with the Pink Panther's Dalang with Show Luo's 爱的主场秀.

A picture of our Pink Panther's Dalang!

Followed by the malay boys' Tecktonik!

Last but not least, our 爱的主场秀!

Pink Panther's Dalang, Tecktonik and Show Luo's 爱的主场秀.
Click that link to see the extra show we put on. :)

Sidenote : The storyline behind the second link goes like this.

Firstly, we will dance the Pink Panther's Dalang Dalang. As it's deemed childish, the malay boys will take over and show off their Tecktonik dance. However, us again, were "utterly disgusted" by their arrogance and shoo-ed them away, showing them our real abilities. LOL. It's oh-so-drama-mama!

When everything ended, abit unbearable to leave eh. Though they were placed in a place like this, they appeared optimistic and hung huge, lovely sunshine smiles on their faces. Seeing their genuine smiles just gave me the energy to carry on and washed away all negativity.

Though we made a fool out of ourselves, all of us knew that all was worthwhile. They were all very positive little kids. Although they are less fortunate then us, but they are still enjoying life as usual just like all of us. This reminds me that we should cherish whatever we have now and live happily, live life to the fullest yo! Time flies so fast and it's time to say goodbye. It's rather sad to leave them. Many were hugging each other saying their Goodbyes. It was such a heartwarming moment! ♥

So the day ended like this. Day Four's gonna be a short one. Thank God! :D

Tata, off to hit the sacks!
